Semen Analysis (Spermogram)

Semen Analysis (Spermogram)

Semen analysis is a test to evaluate the concentration and quality of spermatozoa. It”s one of the first tests to help diagnose infertility problems in men.

Macroscopic parameters that are analyzed in semen samples include volume, color, viscosity and sample appearance and microscopic ones include sperm count, sperm motility, sperm morphology, presence or absence of agglutination and White blood cells.

To ensure that the sperm test is performing in the best conditions, any sexual intercourse should be avoided within 2 to 5 days before testing. This helps sperm count to be as high as possible and the test result is more reliable.

Also, if you have one of the following conditions, be sure to inform the lab:

  • Use of drugs such as cimetidine, male and female hormones (testosterone and estrogen), sulfasalazine, nitrofurantoin and other chemical drugs.
  • Caffeine, alcohol, cocaine, marijuana or tobacco
  • Use of herbal medicines
  • Exposure to X-rays, radiotherapy, and chemicals such as insecticides etc.
